Heftet og i god stand.
In Voices from Sápmi, the first doctoral thesis ever published in the Sámi language,
Vuokko Hirvonen studies Sámi women’s literature and how Sámi women became authors.
Some of the women had to witness their mother give birth while they were tied to one of the poles holding up the tent. Some of them had to quit school because their father wanted them to ”be of use” for the household, or because the teacher thought they had learned enough – for a Sámi. Some of them had to give up their mother tongue when they started school.
The book helps us understand individual women’s lives and their views of society and gender relations, as well as the history of the Sámi Movement. In terms of theory, Voices from Sápmi is based on both post-colonial literary criticism and feminist criticism. Thus, it draws upon the academic principle that considers neither the Western way of thinking nor the Western discourse, presumptions and conventions as objective matters of fact.
