Hawkesworth (political science, Univ. of Louisville) has written a literate and incisive analysis of traditional and contemporary attitudes toward women. She does an excellent job of delineating the political problems women face in pursuing feminist goals. She rejects the idea that women can achieve parity with men through traditional methods. She advocates a constitutional change which would require that women hold 50 percent of all elective, appointive, and bureaucratic offices. Many readers will find her proposal impractical; nevertheless, this is a good addition to any women’s studies collections.
